MVP Automation: Testing and Iteration

You have created your first MVP. It works. At least at first glance. But here comes the question: **Does it work as it should? Or maybe it just "sort of works"?** Automation, even the smallest, **always requires testing and refining**. There is no such thing as "ready right away". In this chapter, I will show you how to test your solutions, how to draw conclusions from them, and when it is worth fixing them – and when to leave them alone.

Why are tests so important?

Because even the best automation idea can:

  • not work 100% of the time,

  • be unclear to users,

  • introduce errors not present in the manual version,

  • cause chaos instead of savings.

Testing allows you to catch all of this before you start implementing the solution on a larger scale.

How to test automation?

You don’t need a specialized QA (Quality Assurance) department. You just need to test the solution in real conditions and calmly, without pressure.

A few simple steps:

1. Use automation on your own for a few days

See if it does exactly what you expect. Is it missing anything? Are the results correct?

2. Ask the team for feedback

Testing tasks, simple questions like:

– What did you like?

– What was unclear?

– What would you change?

3. Check unusual cases

Automation usually works well when everything goes according to plan. But what if the client doesn’t enter an email address? Or if someone adds a comma instead of a dot? Test such exceptions.

4. Record errors and reactions

Every error is an opportunity for improvement. Keep a simple journal: “What went wrong? What needs improvement?”.

Iteration – improve before you scale

It's not about correcting endlessly. But a few quick iterations (i.e., versions with corrections) after tests can make a huge difference.

Do it in cycles:

  1. Test

  2. Gather feedback

  3. Correction (technical or process)

  4. Retest

After 2–3 rounds, you usually have a stable version that you don’t have to be afraid to share with the whole team.

What to improve and what to leave?

Not every comment requires a response. Filter feedback through a simple grid:

  • Is it an error that realistically affects the process? → Correct

  • Is it just a matter of habit? → Observe, don’t rush

  • Is it something that will improve user comfort? → Worth considering

Sometimes it’s worth leaving something imperfect if it works and doesn’t interfere. Perfectionism kills implementation.

When do you know that automation is "ready"?

When:

  • it works correctly for several cycles,

  • users understand it and have no problem using it,

  • the effect is noticeable (e.g., saved time, fewer errors),

  • you have documentation, meaning someone other than you also knows how it works.

Then you can say: OK, it’s time to implement it more widely or move on.
